Young Chang Pianos
Young Chang builds modern acoustic pianos with American-designed scales and solid South Korean manufacturing heritage. The result: serious musical performance without the premium brand markup. If you're shopping Yamaha or Kawai, you should know about Young Chang. Same quality—you're just not paying for the name.
The Piano Industry's Best Kept Secret
The reason you’re hearing this name more frequently? Young Chang pianos are just as good as Yamaha pianos. Same quality materials. Same skilled craftsmanship. Same musical performance. The main difference is, you're not paying for the flashy name or a massive marketing budget.
People who know pianos already know this. Lincoln Center knows—Young Chang was the official piano of the David H. Koch Theater, home of the NYC Ballet. The President of Disney Theatrical Productions has one in his office. Universities across America are full of them, and we keep one in every one of our practice rooms because the craftsmanship and durability run so high. Now you know, too.
The Young Chang Story
Young Chang's story starts with Yamaha. During Japan's occupation of Korea, Yamaha established piano manufacturing there. When Japan withdrew after World War II, three brothers who had managed the factory took it over. Two of them were named Young and Chang. (History doesn't tell us how the third brother felt about the name.)
That DNA still runs through every Young Chang piano. The action design is almost identical to Yamaha's—which is why the two brands sound and feel so similar when you sit down to play. So why does Young Chang cost less?
When South Korean labor became expensive, Young Chang built a state-of-the-art factory in China—owned by Young Chang, not outsourced to a third party. They sent Korean workers to train the Chinese workforce so pianos would be built the same way, with the same high-quality materials. The Yamaha U1, by contrast, is still made in Japan, where labor costs are among the highest in the world.
The other difference? Marketing budgets. Yamaha spends on brand positioning. Young Chang puts that money into the piano.
What this means for you:
- Similar action and feel — Same design heritage, same responsive touch
- Real spruce soundboards — Solid spruce construction, not laminated alternatives
- Professional build quality — Korean-trained workforce, same methods and materials as the original South Korean factory
- Lower price, same piano — You're not paying for Japanese labor costs or a massive marketing department
What Makes Young Chang Different
Young Chang shares Yamaha's design heritage, but it's developed its own personality over the decades. Here's what players notice:
Lighter, responsive action — Suits developing players, but also works for advanced players who like a responsive action. Easier to control dynamics and articulation.
Bright, clear tone — Perfect for playing popular music or projecting in a room full of people.
Stronger bass for the size — Small grands (5'–5'2") and uprights punch above their weight in the low end.
Even touch across all keys — Consistent keyweight from bass to treble, so the piano feels predictable and controllable.
Built to last — We've operated rehearsal studios in NYC for over 25 years. Every room has a Young Chang. They get played 10 hours a day, 364 days a year, and need remarkably little maintenance. No other brand holds up like this.
Every manufacturer has its sweet spot. Young Chang's is the 5' baby grand—stronger bass than you'd expect from its size, and genuinely better than many pianos costing significantly more. We think it's the best value in baby grands, full stop.
Young Chang's Sister Brands: Weber & Albert Weber
Young Chang also owns Weber—same factory, same quality standards, different personality. Weber has a heavier action favored by conservatory students building finger strength. Same quality, different feel.
For players who want the finest materials: Albert Weber is made with ultra-premium parts including a Renner action—the same action found in a Steinway. We rent all of them.
PLAYED IN PIANOS — Why "Previously Rented" Is a Feature
New pianos are stiff. They can need up to 4 tunings in the first year just to settle. That's why professional musicians prefer played-in instruments—a piano develops its character over time. You wouldn't run a marathon in brand new shoes. Our rentals are already played in and arrive at your home ready for practice.

WHY OUR PIANOS LAST
We’re a rental company. We buy pianos we want to own forever—so our grandkids can rent them to your grandkids. You can purchase if you want, but that’s not our goal. We just want you to play it, love it, and send it back when you’re done so we can find a new home for it. That’s why we only buy quality instruments that will last forever.
Why Rent?
Rent first. Decide later.
No commitment. Rent for as long as you want—months or years. No time limits, no pressure to buy. Ever.
No risk. If it's not right, swap it. If your kid quits, we pick it up. No 500-pound monument to good intentions.
The piano grows with you. Start with a console, switch to a professional upright when you're ready. Change models anytime.
Keep your options open. Fall in love? Apply 100% of your first year's rental payments toward purchase—of that piano or any other we have of equal or greater value.
Your monthly rate never increases. End of story.

What It Actually Feels Like to Play
Touch: The action feels consistent from note to note. No sudden heavy spots or uneven response. Teachers and players note this makes it easier to control dynamics and articulation, especially for players moving up from a digital piano or an aging spinet.
Young Chang's lighter action suits developing players, but also works for advanced players who like a responsive action, similar to a Yamaha. (By contrast, Weber's action runs heavier—beloved by conservatory students building finger strength, but potentially fatiguing for beginners.)
Tone: Warm and clear, with enough brightness to project but without the glassy hardness some associate with cheaper Asian pianos. The smaller grands (5′–5′2″) sound fuller than you'd expect thanks to the floating soundboard design around the bass bridge.
The Bottom Line
Young Chang is the piano industry's best kept secret. Not because it's obscure—Lincoln Center, Disney, and universities across America all chose them. It's a secret because most shoppers don't look past the brand names they already know.
Now you know.
